Life’s sometimes stressful enough if we’re just looking after ourselves, going to work and running our home. But, if you add the extra challenges a partner, children and parents can bring into the mix (sometimes all at once!) then you’ve got a fairly decent recipe for stress.
That’s why I’ve always thought that keeping a good life/work balance is important. It’s harder to get out of bed if you feel that life is all work and no play! I reckon having balance helps us keep our morale and enthusiasm up and functioning at our best. It also enables us to continue providing care or support – as the saying goes – “It's better to take a break, than break down”.
Accepting help is a big one for getting a good balance in your life – from family, friends, neighbours, organisations, whoever. People like to help and it makes them feel good to be able to do it. So I think we should all do them a favour and actually let them help if they offer!
Another tip I often pass on is, it’s ok to accept ‘good enough’ instead of demanding ‘perfection’ from ourselves – and others.
At the end of the day, I think laughter is the best medicine. Whether it’s watching a comedy show on TV or a funny clip on YouTube, having a laugh on a phone call with a friend or finding (making!) the time to visit a stand-up comedy night locally, the fact is that laughter definitely has a positive impact on my wellbeing and health! And I’m sure it would for everyone else too.
