Dementia is the umbrella term and Alzheimers disease is only one of many types of dementia.  although many of the symptoms are the same the causes are very diferrent.  for example there is a vascular dementia caused by a failing of the vascualar system.  alzheimer's disease just happens to be the most common, accounting for about 55% of all dementia cases.  Follow this link to the Dmentia forward website wher there is a picture diagram whcih clearly explains it.
