Topic created By - jderrick (04 July 2012 - 13:42:45) Around 55,000 families have to pay ‘top-up’ care home fees, as some councils don't pay the full costs. What are your views on this? Have you ever had to pay third party top-ups?

Submitted By - timbarber1 11/07/2012 09:18:44 When we had to put Mum into care when she started to put herself in danger, we looked around a lot of Care homes and found one which we thought would be best. Unfortunately for what the Council would fund (as even though diagnosed with alzheimers disease, social services said it was not a medical condition!) was far less than the cost of the home.

As we wanted the best for Mum, we ended up topping up the care cost by £1,500 a month. This soon whittled down Mum's lifetime savings and as we couldn't find a buyer for Mum's house, my brother and I ended up having to put our hand in our own pocket for 6 months.

Now we have sold Mums house, we bought 2 flats with the money  which we rent which the income from along with her pension does cover the top up. I suppose we had the choice of choosing a cheaper home were full care would be covered, but when we viewed this level of Care home we felt that they were so basic and underfunded, we wouldn't have put our worst enemy in there let alone our Mum.

It does seem sad that Mum had worked so hard all her life to get some savings that she hoped would go to me and my brother as inheritance - but disappeared funding/topping up her first years care.
